The Crow and the Pigeon's Egg - A Saturday Morning that I will never forget.

Story of a fine Saturday morning that choked me up with the Brutal reality of Life.

I have never regretted coming over to my balcony for a regular stretch than that day . It was a fine Saturday morning with the Sun making his ritualistic escalation up the azure skies with his orange hues. I heard the usual caw caws of the crows , who are trained to expect some food in the neighbors' terrace around that time. Courtesy me . I have a separate box of biscuits for my caw-caw friends and I had just thrown the biscuits . But something caught  my eye. I usually see the crows making a bee line for the biscuits as they start flying down to peck on the biscuits in some random hierarchy . I used to enjoy the sight as they gobble up the crisps and fly away. Gives me a soul satisfying emotion.

This one day, a certain Raven crow ( totally black one , more ferocious and energetic breed of crow ) didn't scour on the biscuits but rather made a detour that made my heart skip a beat. A certain pigeon couple had been guarding their prized egg all these days, in their humble stick nest , up in the chimney hole in the opposite building. I used to chuckle to myself when I see the bird's egg , thinking if it will be a male pigeon or a female pigeon and what they will be naming the newest member. This raven crow, surprised not just me , a human being but also the set of other crows who were treating themselves to my humble treat . It went straight to the nest, picked up the ill fated small white egg of the pigeon couple and made one landing in the terrace compound and then sensing some huge awkward vibes from a human and other crows ,it went to a nearby coconut tree to feast on the protein bar it just secured.

I literally a blurted out 'Ada Rama' ( Read : Good Lord , Holy Heavens ) as I helplessly exchanged glances with the other crows. The pigeon couple came back after a while only to notice an empty nest. It set my thoughts in a Whirlpool of Good vs Bad reasoning. Will I judge the raven crow for having eaten up the cherished baby egg of those pigeons or Should i empathize with it , for it's hunger was beyond limits that day and my biscuits wouldn't have been enough , and the other crows had to eat something but at the same time, it needed to satisfy it's own hunger, or..... show human sympathy on the pigeons forgetting all the logic , giving 0 benefits to the Crows.  How can I blame the crow for feasting on this egg ? Unlike humans,  the alleged lesser intelligent living creatures of Earth won't do food experiments and will not eat anything outside it's prescribed food palate. After all , Crows are indeed omnivorous, as in , they eat both meat/flesh and other vegetable and non meat produce. So , scientifically the crow just did something totally normal according to the laws of nature . On the other hand, it does look like the pigeons were unjustified and punished for no mistake of theirs . Was it a mistake for the two pigeons to have mated to extend their own family ? Whose side will I take. Why will I even bother ? But what does this all mean. What appears to be Right / Good for one is wrong/bad for the other. Life is orchestrated in such a way that the rise of one entity means the downfall of another. May be this was all meant for maintaining the balance of the universe. May be, the raven crow was dying and it needed something really high on the calories to survive a few more days. May be , the egg was a still born pigeon child or an unfertilized one and the universe didn't want to build expectations and disappoint the pigeons with possible parenthood. As I ruminated over all the possible ifs and buts,I unplugged my reasoning to simply understand the situation like a child.

I just reminded myself that from that day on wards, I am going to adopt a few principles on how I will live my own life .
  • Never judge someone based on something until I learnt both sides of the story
  • Never be hasty in helping someone , in the pretext of me being the Angel of their life
  • Never question the laws of nature, as all human logic and reasoning leaves many questions open ended
  • Finally , Never stand on that balcony after I have thrown the biscuits , rather leave immediately . whether the crows accept my biscuits or leave it to the squirrels or eat pigeon eggs is not my concern.

I will always do my karma  . Feeding my caw caw friends is my karma and I will leave the rest to destiny. The results & consequences will take its own natural course. Indeed, the action is the entity we can and should control . Never waste a moment on trying to understand what happens next, or bother yourself with doubts on what can go wrong . All the preparation & reasoning should be done before the action. The result is  destiny's child.

  1. Life is all about accepting the nature, sometimes it is indecipherable perhaps that's the destiny.
